Painting Furniture

Supplies:

Primer, Satin or Semi-gloss latex paint, 100 and 220 grit sandpaper, dust mast, drop cloths, small velour (feels like a hotel blanket!) roller, small roller tray, blue painters tape, brown paper bag (unprinted side).

Preparation:
1. Remove any hardware not to be painted. Use medium grit sandpaper (100 grit) to lightly sand all surfaces to be painted. Use a dry paint brush to brush off all dust after sanding. Now use a fine grit sandpaper (220 grit). Brush off dust, especially in corners. Use a tack cloth (available at the paint store) to finish the sanding process by rubbing over all sanded areas to pick up residue from sanding.

2. You are now ready to paint. Place boards under each end of furniture to raise at least 1”. Place drop cloths under to protect surfaces. I suggest using a pair of old pantyhose to strain the paint (if you use knee high hose, slip the hose over the quart can and pour out into the paint tray, wash hose to reuse for other paints). Use a brush (the better the brush the better the finish) to brush paint into the corner areas and immediately use your velour roller to smooth out and apply the paint to flat areas (lightly moisten the roller cover with water and then roll enough paint into it to apply to surface). You do not want a tremendous amount of paint on your roller cover, it should not be dripping. Remember that two light coats are always better than one heavy coat.

3. I like to sand between coats (which have dried at least 24 hours) with a brown paper bag. The paper fibers are just rough enough to smooth your surface.

4. Let your project cure for at least one week before step 5.

5. Replace hardware to furniture piece.
