Helpful Tips for Painting Walls

Step 1: Make sure that you prepare the surface properly. Clean with a light solution of TSP and fill any imperfections with Spackle. Caulking the cracks or openings along woodwork will make your job look professional. Purchase a large drywall scraper and scrape the walls to remove nubbie bits left from old paint jobs.

Tip: Always paint with a friend! You aren’t supposed to swim alone so why should you paint alone?

Step 2: Choose the right sheen for your room. The new scrubbable matte finishes hide wall imperfections and absorb light. Glossy finishes reflect light and stand up well in high-moisture areas. If you have ink or water stains, cover with a coat of pigmented shellac (you can buy a spray can).

Step 3: Move out as much as you can from the room and cover anything that you do not want paint to get on with drop cloths. I use foil to cover door knobs and light fixtures.

Step 4: Strain your paint! You should paint surfaces in this order; ceiling, walls, and then trim.

Tip: Use an old pair of panty hose to strain paint and throw away when finished.

Step 5: Roll on the paint in tall W shape about 2 feet wide. Always use an extension pole and use a 1⁄4” roller cover (buy the best quality).

Tip: dampen your roller cover and trim brush before starting. This will help to wick up your paint and make it go on smoother.
