Gitchee was an American white pelican who became a beloved local celebrity in Ashland, Wisconsin, about 15 miles from our home. She was named by the community after the Ojibwe word for the "Big Lake" (Lake Superior) and captivated locals by refusing to migrate south for the winter. However, upon her rescue in early December, wildlife biologists discovered she was starving and unable to fly because she had been shot multiple times and suffered from lead poisoning. Despite extensive rehabilitation efforts, Gitchee tragically passed away in her sleep in March 2026 due to the severity of her injuries.
This vibrant 36”x30”x2” stretched canvas painting features the American Pelican in her feathered glory. Pointillism technique was used to create a sense of depth and movement in the background while geometric shapes create the folk art border.
